New Believers: Five Practical Steps for Deepening Your Faith

Many people come to a saving knowledge of Jesus and then don’t know what the next steps are. Growing in your faith from the start is one of the most important things that you can do. While salvation is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ, spiritual growth happens as we intentionally seek Him day by day. Below are 5 practical steps that can help new believers strengthen their walk with the Lord and experience deeper spiritual maturity.

1. Study the Bible Daily

The Bible is God’s Word and the primary way He reveals His character, truth, and will for our lives. Setting aside time each day to read Scripture allows us to better understand Jesus and how we are called to live.

If you are unsure where to begin, the Book of John is an excellent place to start because it focuses on the life and identity of Jesus Christ. The Book of Philippians is also helpful because it teaches about joy, humility, and faithful Christian living.

When studying the Bible you should use tools that help you to understand what you are reading. There are many that are available online. Below are a few that I would recommend:

               Got Questions: https://www.gotquestions.org/

-This is an excellent site to answer many questions that a new believer has!

               Enduring Word Bible Commentary: https://enduringword.com/

-This is a good Bible Commentary that explains the scriptures verse by verse.

Scripture:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
— Psalm 119:105

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
— 2 Timothy 3:16

God’s Word guides our decisions, shapes our attitudes, and strengthens our faith.

2. Develop a Consistent Prayer Life

Prayer is simply communication with God. Through prayer, we share our gratitude, struggles, needs, and desires with Him. Prayer also helps us align our hearts with God’s will and reminds us that we are never alone.

If you are new to your faith, you may not know how to pray. To begin your prayer life, simply start having a conversation with God. Praise and thank Him for being who He is. Pray that His will be done in your life. Also, pray for your needs. They could be things like problems you are dealing with or needs that you have. We should also pray and ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins.

Scripture:

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
— Philippians 4:6

“Pray without ceasing.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17

A strong prayer life strengthens our relationship with God and gives us peace even during difficult seasons.

3. Get Plugged into a Church

God never intended for believers to live the Christian life alone. Being part of a church provides opportunities for worship, fellowship, encouragement, and accountability. A healthy church community helps us grow spiritually and use our gifts to serve others.

Not just any church will do! You need to make sure that you attend a church where the pastor brings messages using the Bible. Activities should also focus on believers fellowshipping together and growing in their faith.

Scripture:

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…”
— Hebrews 10:24–25

Church fellowship reminds us that we are part of the body of Christ, united in purpose and faith.

4. Find a Mentor or Small Group

Spiritual growth is often strengthened through relationships with mature believers who can offer guidance, encouragement, and wisdom. Mentors and small groups provide safe places to ask questions, share struggles, and grow together. If you are new in your faith, don’t be embarrassed about asking questions, you will have a lot!

Scripture:

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
— Proverbs 27:17

Learning from others who have walked with Christ longer can help us avoid pitfalls and remain encouraged in our faith journey.

5. Understand Grace and Forgiveness

Many new believers struggle with feelings of guilt or the pressure to be perfect. However, Christianity is rooted in grace. Through Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and accepted by God. Our relationship with Him is not based on perfection, but on His love and mercy.

Scripture:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
— 1 John 1:9

Understanding God’s grace allows us to live in freedom, gratitude, and confidence in His love.

Final Encouragement

Growing closer to God is a lifelong process. As you study Scripture, pray faithfully, connect with other believers, seek guidance, and rest in God’s grace, your relationship with Him will deepen. God desires to know you personally and walk with you each day.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
— James 4:8

Small daily steps of faith can lead to powerful spiritual transformation.
