What Happened on Thursday of Holy Week?

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet – A Lesson in Humility

In a culture where servants performed the task of washing dusty feet, Jesus shocked His disciples by kneeling before them and washing their feet. The Creator of the universe humbled Himself in an act of love and service.

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” — John 13:14

Jesus demonstrated that true greatness in the Kingdom of God is found in serving others. Leadership in Christ’s kingdom is not about power, but about humility.

The Last Supper – The Gift of Communion

During the Passover meal, Jesus gave new meaning to the bread and cup. He established what we now call Communion or The Lord’s Supper.

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.” — Luke 22:19

This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” — Luke 22:20

Communion reminds us that Jesus willingly gave His body and shed His blood so that our sins could be forgiven. It is a symbol of grace, sacrifice, and the new covenant between God and His people.

Jesus Prays in the Garden – Surrender to the Father

After the meal, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Knowing the suffering He was about to face, He poured out His heart to the Father.

Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” — Luke 22:42

In this moment, we see both the humanity of Jesus and His perfect obedience. Even in deep anguish, Jesus chose surrender.

Jesus Is Arrested – Love in the Face of Betrayal

Judas arrived with soldiers and betrayed Jesus with a kiss. Even as He was arrested, Jesus responded with calm authority and compassion.

The cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?” — John 18:11

Jesus could have stopped the arrest, but He willingly submitted because He knew the cross was necessary for our salvation.

Final Thought

Thursday of Holy Week reminds us that Christianity is not built by force, but servant-hearted love, sacrificial grace, and complete obedience to God’s will.

Jesus showed us:
Serve others humbly
Remember His sacrifice
Pray with sincerity
Trust God even in hardship

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13
