It is Finished
“It Is Finished” — The Victory of the Cross
Few words in Scripture carry the depth, power, and hope contained in Jesus’ final declaration from the cross:
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)
At first glance, these words may sound like a statement of defeat, the end of a life, the conclusion of a mission cut short. But in truth, “It is finished” is not a cry of despair, it is a shout of victory. It is the declaration that the work of redemption was fully accomplished!
The Work Was Completed
Jesus did not say, “I am finished.” He said, “It is finished.”
The Greek word used here is tetelestai, meaning paid in full, completed, accomplished perfectly. In ancient times, this word would be written across a bill when a debt had been completely satisfied. When Jesus spoke these words, He was declaring that the debt of sin, your sin and mine, had been completely paid.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Sin separates us from God. No amount of good works, religious effort, or personal striving could ever bridge the gap. Humanity needed a Savior, and Jesus was the only One who could fulfill that role.
The cross was not an accident. It was the plan. From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus knew why He had come:
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)
The Price Was Paid
When Jesus died on the cross, He took upon Himself the punishment that we deserved. Every failure, every sinful thought, every wrong decision — all placed upon Him.
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
The justice of God has been satisfied, and the love of God was demonstrated in the same moment. The cross shows us how seriously God takes sin, but also how deeply He loves sinners.
Jesus did not merely make salvation possible; He completed the work necessary for salvation. Nothing needs to be added. Nothing can be improved. It is finished.
What This Means for Us Today
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He was declaring that salvation is not something we achieve, it is something we receive. We do not work for salvation we do not earn salvation, we do not deserve salvation, salvation comes through the finished work of Jesus on the Cross.
If you have never trusted in Jesus, today can be the day you receive the gift He paid for on the cross. Confess your sins and ask Jesus to be your Savior.
When doubts arise…
When guilt whispers…
When life feels overwhelming…
Remember the words of Jesus:
“It is finished.”
